I’m here to explain why we don’t have enough broccolis this year, and what you can do about it.
Why Can’t We Find Broccoli in Stores?
This year, getting our hands on some tasty broccoli has been pretty tough. But why? Well, a bunch of reasons, really.
Hot Weather and Drought Caused Problems
Do you know how the weather can mess up your plans sometimes? Well, that’s what happened to broccoli farms this year. It was super hot, and there wasn’t enough rain. That’s bad news for broccoli because it needs just the right amount of water and not too much heat. The broccoli and cauliflower crops got hit the hardest.
The Cold Weather Also Played a Part
Believe it or not, even cold weather can hurt broccoli. This winter, it was super cold, and some broccoli crops got ruined. The National Farmers Union says it’s been a tough time for them.
Not Enough Workers on Farms
Farms need lots of people to help grow and pick the veggies. But this year, there weren’t enough workers. Some of the folks who usually come to work on farms from Ukraine couldn’t make it because of problems back home. To help out, they’re letting more workers come in until 2024.
Why Are People So Upset About Broccoli?
Broccoli might not be everyone’s favorite veggie, but people really miss it when it’s not around. They’ve been talking about it on social media, saying how much they want it back. With other food shortages going on, losing broccoli is tough.
When Will the Broccoli Shortage End?
We don’t know exactly when we’ll have enough broccoli again. So, some experts suggest that you try growing your own broccoli at home. It’s not too hard if you learn a bit about it.
What Can You Eat Instead of Broccoli?
While we wait for broccoli to come back, you can eat other veggies to stay healthy. Cucumbers, tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, and spinach are good options. These veggies have vitamins, fiber, and other good stuff to keep you strong and feeling good.
So, even though we’re missing broccoli right now, there are still plenty of tasty and healthy veggies to enjoy. Don’t worry; broccoli will be back on your plate before you know it!
